About Me

Every time someone asks me to describe myself, I get lost in my thoughts and wander off to a place so far; how do I start, and how do I end my story? What makes me Niyonkuru?

Growing up in a war-torn refugee camp( Lukole), Tanzania, I've always had a passion for wanting a better world, a better community (Burundi) for my family and me and most importantly, for refugees like myself. For what feels like a lifetime now, I walked the streets from street #41 to wherever life would take me regularly. As a child, it is hard to tell whether you're living your best life or worst life; for me, life experiences in Lukore were some of the best times in life, or so I perceive.

Although life might not have been so "bad" for my family, I witnessed parents, and older siblings struggle daily to provide for the younger ones!

I remember seeing people come and go from my house almost every week. My mom was a mother to many people in the camp; she'd welcome just about anyone in, feed them, and even shelter them at times.

It is from her that I learn to GIVE! From my mother, I learn to sympathize with others. She taught me always to help those in need, even if I don't think I can.

After watching mama help people for many years, I developed an interest in wanting to help people, get involved, and be a shoulder to those in need.

I initially created this blog for my Berlin Experience until one of my advisors encouraged me to do more and keep it going.

Through this blog, I will not only share about my time in Berlin, but I will also talk about my life as a refugee, school, and much more. Please take time and explore and get to know about me! :)
